Double Review, Dragon Ball Z Bojack Unbound and Broly: Second Coming

Disclaimer

These reviews are written for movies based off of an anime. The way I review is by plot, characters, emotional pull and action, animation quality, and creativity. I may mention the original source material but I will not use that for a bases of this review. I will be reviewing each movie as a stand alone item. This is only a double review because both movies are rather short. Thanks for reading.

Tien vs. trunks

The plot with Bojack Unbound is actually a pretty interesting premise. What is happening is there is a fighting tournament with supposed aliens involved, and the winner gets a chance to fight the world champion Mr. Satan a.k.a. Hercule, also known as the guy who took credit for killing Cell. Everything is going okay with the fighting tournament, but suddenly it is taken over by actual aliens, planet destroyers and pirates working for Bojack, who was released from the star he was in because of Goku accidentally killing King Kai. It isn't a bad story line honestly, tying into the Dragon Ball Z lore and the end of the Cell Games rahter nicely though it is a little rushed, this doesn't phase it too much.

Broly: Second Coming begins with Videl teamed up with Goten and Trunks of all people. She is looking for the dragon balls to meet Shenron, the boys just want silly wishes. They end up helping a village with a dinosaur issue but Goten's crying revives a frozen Broly who landed on Earth after the events of his last movie. The boys and Videl fight against Broly, who only seems to be toying with them in his own sadistic amusement while in regular super saiyen. When Gohan shows up and goes super saiyen 2, Broly enters his legendary form with ease and fights Gohan happily. The story doesn't make too much sense, but since Broly is already an established character this is more like his first movie but part two and a few years later. It isn't a bad plot and it works, just not all that great.

Characterization

In Bojack Unbound, characters are almost silly versions of themselves. Vegeta is depressed about Goku dying which is almost silly but can be justified, Chi-Chi likes Gohan getting exercise which is odd, and future Trunks is still around because... huh? Since the movie doesn't establish these characters all that well other then these silly mannerisms, this may not be a good thing for newer fans, but it can be justified to do this. Piccolo makes sense however, Krillin is the same, Hercule is easily his normally cowardly self, Gohan and Trunks are also the same, and Goku is just like Goku from the original anime. The biggest complaint however is that Bojack comes out of nowhere. He is back, and evil, and kind of 2-D for a character. He also has minions which personality wise aren't much better then the Ginyu force, just more quiet.

In Broly: Second Coming, everyone acts like they would in previous content. Videl is there and just as hot headed as ever, Trunks is a brat, Goten is goofy, Broly while rarely talking is still about as cruel and semi intelligent while being driven insane by Goku's and Goten's crying. The villagers you see at the start of the movie are amusing as well. There aren't many new characters but Goten's and Gohan's reaction to their dad coming back was pretty cool, and it is nice that Broly and the others didn't change for the movie's sake, and we do get to see some of their emotional responses. If you look closely you can see some of Broly's personality as well though it isn't spelled out but he likes toying with people in a sadistic nature, not just killing.

Bojack Unbound is funny at times. Sometimes I don't think it was intended, like with Vegeta being depressed. Hercule is in the movie so yeah there was some intended humor, and Krillin vs. Piccolo was pretty silly as well, something Piccolo mentions and leaves because of it. the fight between Trunks and Tien while short was pretty good. Trunks' fight with one of Bojack's minions was pretty awesome. Bojack's death and fight was pretty good excluding one thing but I'll get to that next section. Also, it was pretty cold when Bojack uses and kills his own minion.

Broly: Second Coming was kind of silly. I think it was on purpose honestly since you mostly saw Broly toying with Trunks and Goten. Goten ends up having to pee, Trunks ends up having to pee and wets himself on Broly's head, Videl is knocked back more times then I can remember. The action was good when Gohan was there, and was purposely silly when he wasn't there, but it may have been too much on the humor but that may also be a personal nit pick too. The fight between Broly and Gohan was awesome, and it was pretty cool to see Goku giving the boys lessons on the Kamahamaha Wave.

Bojack Unbound needs to pick a scene and stick with it. There are many times I was a little lost on who was fighting where and when. Suddenly Gohan just ditches his fight to find Bojack, and his opponent isn't seen until later. How Gohan escaped the fight is beyond me honestly. Most of the time the scene doesn't do this, but I have no idea what is up and down sometimes, and where the heck they are in relation to the other stages of the fighting tournament, as they are all in the area of the fighting tournament somehow. Don't get me wrong, the setting is creative but it makes it so dang confusing, and character placement is a jumbled mess half the time during fights. The animation is pretty good however, and the fights are well animated artistically, but the scenes are suffering a lot here.

Broly: Second Coming is animated well. The issues I had with the first movie have been fixed and the lighting makes things far less confusing even when Broly's power changes everything green for a bit. Really well animated and all the scenes are well done.

Creativity

Bojack's design and his minions design is pretty well done. While their super form could use a bit of work as it is just a bulky version with different colors and isn't as well designed as one of Freiza's forms, or as flashy as a super saiyen form, but it does get the job done. The setting was nice, though the second part made little sense as stated above. Pretty decent creativity.

Broly: Second Coming was interesting as Broly's design has changed a bit, as no longer under his father's control his normal super saiyen form looks like a normal form instead of having blue hair. Him enjoying picking on kids and the things they do was creative, and the designs of Videl's new outfit and the villagers was pretty decent.

Bojack Unbound isn't a bad flick. Gohan saves the day so if you are a fan of Gohan this is a must see. The Scene Quality gets bad around the later half but it is watchable though it can harm the enjoyment of some of the better fights too. Bojack is fairly well designed, but not greatly designed and he kind of has no background outside of he is evil and was sealed in a star. It is an interesting story but characterization is a bit on the bland side.

Broly: Second Coming is a pretty good flick, especially if you are a fan of the first Broly movie. While far more silly then action based, the action is pretty good when it gets there, and there is more character building for Broly and for Gohan and Goten. The story is quick however and while animated well and decent creative elements, there isn't much else to draw people in here. It rates high and is well done, but you also have to be a fan of Dragon Ball Z and Broly to enjoy this movie fully even if it is well done on paper.
