Disclaimer

This list is a personal choice list. Basically I pick my favorite pokemon by design from the first generation and list them starting with my tenth favorite and going up to my favorite. I will also be taking into account their shiny versions and if need be their mega evolutions if it is applied. This is a design choice, not personal favorites to use or about how good the pokemon are in battle, rather if I feel that they were designed originally and look good. Keep in mind, I normally function towards the evolved forms more then base forms, however if I feel there is a rare previous form that is designed better then the fully evolved form I'll mention it. If the pokemon has two forms or mega evolutions, then I'll bring them up as well. Thank you for reading.

#10. Mewtwo

Mewtwo

If you asked me a few years ago, I'd have told you my favorite legendary was Mewtwo. He is still a favorite of mine, but not the top, and not in design choice either. I still love his design, I think it works well for the power he has, and the cat like thing in a lab is just awesome. If Mew is the Cheshire Cat then Mewtwo is the Jabberwocky. His mega forms are okay, they look odd and haven't really grown on me much, his smaller form is okay, but his bulkier form is just weird. His shiny version is awesome too, going from purple to green.

#9. Rhydon

Is it a rhino? Is it a rock drill monster? Kind of both and neither. Rhydon has a completely original design and that design is totally awesome, and while his shiny form may not change much, I love how it makes him look more natural compared to his regular color which makes him look more urban and concrete. While Rhydon does have an evolved form now, I personally like this design better and that one is not from this generation. I'd love to see Rhydon playable in Pokken!

#8. Raichu

Raichu

Pikachu is adorable, and Pichu is even more adorable, but I personally like Raichu more. Raichu actually looks like a mouse, which mouse is kind of referenced in his name, and his tail looks amazing as well, with the right mix of mouse tail and electric reference. His shiny is dull but other then that his design is awesome, I also like his yellow cheeks instead of the typical red ones Pikachu sports.

#7. Electabuzz

Electrobuzz

Speaking of electric pokemon, there are three pokemon that have human based forms that are harder to collect (not including Mr. Mime) that are Magmar, Jynx, and Electabuzz, and the later has the better design. Why does this creature stand upright? Because it is an original design. It looks like it can throw down and almost speak English, giving it a mix between a pokemon and a Dungeons & Dragons design. It is also the only creature to have goofy antenna and still look awesome, though his evolved form is pretty good, but his shiny is boring.

#6. Nidoking

Nidoking

Nidoking is the male counterpart to Nidoqueen and is in the sae kind of design as Rhydon. They are probably closely related actually, all being drill pokemon. Being poison and ground type sounds weird with his design, and his ears are a little goofy, but this thing looks like it could take on most anything. It is a powerful and cool design, and while his shiny is just Nidoqueen's colors, having him in blue looks just as awesome as his signature purple color.

#5. Dragonair

Dragonair

Yes, I think Dragonair looks better then Dragonite. No offense, Dragonite is awesome, but I think Dragonair is more original and looks better overall. Dragonite looks too much like Charizard honestly, and Dragonair looks like a sea serpent dragon ready to stab with its horn. I could also be a sucker for blue as well but still. This thing has a pretty original shiny, while I like the original colors better, the purple and yellow shiny pokemon version of this is pretty cool too.

#4. Vaporeon

Vaporeon

Again, maybe I'm just a sucker for blue. Since the day I've first seen it, this was my favorite Eeveelution from generation I. It is no longer my favorite, and I like the other ones due to the fox designs in different elements, but I've always had a soft spot for Vaporeon. I like the original color better, but the shiny isn't bad, and yes I love the design for Jolteon and Flareon, but Vaporeon is easily my favorite design from the three.

#3. Charizard

Everyone's favorite from generation I. While I respect his design a lot more, and his shiny and mega evolutions looking amazing too, this got him higher then my use to be favorite Venasaur and even Blastoise. His shiny switches colors so he is black and his wings are red, but it looks so cool, and both his mega evolutions are amazing in design as well. No matter what, Charizard, the large winged salamander just looks awesome. That being said, it isn't my favorite design in Pokemon Generation I.

#2. Aerodactyl

142Aerodactyl

Let's just give a crocodile wings, an awesome tail, an absurdly cool mega evolution, and the shiny is okay, making him look like a dragon prehistoric version of Gligar. Its mega evolution is awesome as well, growing more spikes on its body in a natural fashion making something that already looks dangerous even more fierce.

#1. Gyarados

Gyrados

The shiny is even better (finally not siding with blue) then the regular form, and the regular form is awesome as well. This thing already looks like a beast, and coming from a little stupid looking fish is genius. If the original didn't look awesome enough, let's see it mega evolve, because that thing looks mean too. As far as I'm concerned when it comes to design, Gyrados is easily the best first generation design in the series so far.

Honorable Mention
