Justice League Animated Series Review Season 1

Disclaimer

I try to be as unbias as possible when reviewing any type of media. For a television series I typically review based on plot, characterization, emotional pull, episode quality, and creativity. Any type of nostalgia I may have will not be showcased, nor will I base this review on the original comics. Thank you.

So the plot of Justice League, or at least the beginning is that aliens are invading, and that a martian is trying to warn us. He gathers powerful fighters and forms the Justice League to fight them. After that the Justice League is full of individual stories about the members. There are of course plots involving characters outside of the Justice League cartoons and going into other cartoons like Lex Luthor from the Superman animated series to Joker from Batman the animated series. While they do have continuity to them, they are individual stories but none of the individual plots are really good, from Luthor building the Injustice League to the season final where Vandel Savage reverts time allowing him to take over the world during World War II. None of the plots are bad either so yeah, highly recommended if you like individual plots.

Characterization

The members of the actual league are interesting in this show. Green Lantern has to deal with the Manhunters after they set him up, Flash has to fight Gorilla Grodd and learn to stop being a reckless kid, Martian Manhunter needs to learn to cope with not having his family anymore, and Batman and Superman have continuations of their own series to deal with. Then there are allies and side characters, notably the demon Etrigan who has an interesting few things happening to him as well as some of the WWII heroes of the day. There is a bunch of interesting villains as well including Luthor's continued story as well as Joker and newer villains like the Manhunters and Grodd.

Emotional Pull

There are a few tense moments and a few touching moments, and the action is pretty decent but they are few and far between. There is action in every episode and there are some more "life threatening" issues though it is wrapped up often so quickly we really don't have time to feel the suspense, though at times it is there like when Aquaman has to cut off his own arm. Not bad but could be better. The action while decent isn't anything to write home about either.

Episode Quality

For the most part the animation and each episode is pretty good. It works well and holds up well for the most part, but there are a few parts that you can tell the animation went lazy. This doesn't happen very often however, so outside of that one flaw, this does pretty well for itself, and judging that this is an older animation it is well done and holds up pretty well.

Creativity

There are a few changes in background stories and character designs is great, and the nods and references to lesser known comic characters is impressive, but in the long run the stories are often not as great simply because the creativity is a little too grand with certain characters particularly like Soloman Grundy and Shade, characters never even explained so we literally know little about them. We learn about their personality but you don't learn what ended them up where they are and at times it is a shame, mostly because of how many characters this series has to juggle in a short amount of time.

The only disadvantages of the series so far is the plots are normally single episodes or two to three episodes, there are too many creative characters, slight underwhelming action and emotional issues plus a slight few animation issues. This series however does have a great number of individual plots and character development through the series makes it worth a look through if you enjoy that kind of thing and the animation is pretty great standing up to today's standards pretty well.

If you are a fan of DC comics, a fan of superhero characters and them developing characters then this media should be up your alley. If you are an action junkie tread lightly as the action while decent isn't the greatest out there.
