WARNING this anime is mostly directed towards women. While I am male and I did enjoy it, this anime is recommended for women and is a romantic comedy with fantasy elements. This is the same type of anime as Ouran Host Club so if you dislike that style of humor then this anime will not be for you. Okay on with the review.
WARNING spoilers WARNING
While the set I have says "Complete Series" it is actually season 1 as this anime recently got renewed about three years after the first season and is currently airing in Japan. The plot of this anime begins when a young girl, abandoned by her father and forced into the streets saves a person from a dog. The person grants her his home and she ends up going from human to land goddess. After arguing with the former familiar, she ends up getting him into a contract much to his annoyance. Being a fox spirit, the familiar is into mischief but does protect his lady. The main focus of the anime is for the girl to become a more powerful goddess, however every episode has a subplot as well, most of the time being rather silly it is a comedy after all. Some of the subplots affect the main plot however, for example, bringing the goddess closer to her familiar who she falls in love with, or meeting new characters that continue to reoccur and are really helpful or silly (often times both).
So is the plot good? Well the premise is actually pretty excellent, a young teenage girl falling in love with a fox demon who becomes her familiar after she ends up becoming a goddess by helping the former god of that shrine. It is an interesting plot at the start, and there is a goal which the season ends on proving in a way, which is to make a human girl into a proper land goddess which in a way is shown at the end that she is becoming what is needed of her. However the journey to get to that point isn't all that strong. It is a comedy so I suppose this is to be expected, but there is little actual journey there, as the plot is slightly sacrificed for characterization and humor. It starts and ends strongly, and the sub plots are pretty decent, but there isn't much in the way of solid story plots in between.
Nanami is the main character, a goofy teenaged girl with a stubborn streak to give her more character, she is actually not as typical as the show makes her out to be. She has no friends, her father is a gambler, she gets evicted when he runs out, and so on. She is stubborn but works hard and keeps to herself despite how cheerful she is unless someone does something stupid. Her interactions with other characters reflects this as well as at times she is shy and awkward, while others she can be a bit stubborn and angry as well as emotional making her an entertaining character.
Tomoe is an arrogant silver fox yokai. He is the familiar of the god before Nanami and while he dislikes Nanami at first, he is entertained by her, and is forced to serve her through her wit. He has the personality of a suit unless he is in a fight in which case he gains the added issue of wanting to cook his enemies, though he never does. While he is a clean cut familiar, he has a darker past filled with mystery and anger as he has been known to destroy things and steal the eye of the Dragon King. While his personality is dry and clean cut, he does get irritated easily with Nanami.
Shinjiro is an idol who has been living as a singer hiding the fact that he is a crow yokai. Nanami likes him at first and has a crush on him until meeting him in person in which she grows a dislike of him quickly. However even after discovering he is a yokai after her god hood, she is nice to him and he often returns the favor and helps the group out, though he dislikes Tomoe since the fox turned him into an ostrich and tried to eat him. He is a friend for the most part and is helpful at times, but it is still known he does have an alternate reason for helping.
Mizuki is a white snake that Nanami ended up helping in school. Afterwards he kidnaps her intent on marrying her, though in the end while he doesn't get the girl, she stays his friend. Mizuki visits often trying to keep her from falling in love with Tomoe, and takes her into the past often. Later on, when Nanami gets tricked, he kisses her becoming her second familiar in an effort to save her life much to Tomoe's dislike.
The characters in the anime while pinning at a few cliches of the anime world are interesting and done in their own creative way. There are more characters then this but they are silly but interesting in their own way. These main characters are what you will see most of the time and they are pretty interesting in their own right.
There are a few more serious parts to the anime, but the majority of this anime is meant to get people to laugh, and if you don't mind anime slap stick it is pretty funny. If you dislike this then steer away. The more serious moments, mostly happening in the past are pretty good but not overly great, but the end of the season is pretty great. There isn't much more then that, it is funny, and the serious parts are good with one great part.
The animation in this series is great, but the actual episodes, there is only 13 and not all of them are important. With the few amount of episodes and not all of them are about plot progression. The ones that are about the main plot, like the time travel episodes and the final two episodes are great, but not all the episodes are important, like Mizuki going into town to learn more about humans isn't that great. It wasn't a bad episode, but it was certainly pointless as well. With that, there is only about 6 to 8 episodes that are a must, and about 5 to 7 that are pointless. Again, the animation is great and about roughly half the episodes are great, just about half the episodes are semi pointless and are there for comedy only and don't develop the characters too much.
The traditional Japanese lore used to make this anime is actually pretty good. There is a ton of lore and things we still don't know, but what we do figure out is fairly interesting to say the least. The anime while humorous is rather rich in creativity and lore. The designs of the characters are excellent, and the settings are pretty decent as well.
Overall while the anime is focused on females with the romantic comedy side to it, there isn't a huge amount of reasons males can't watch either. It has the same draw as Ouran Host Club, but it isn't as bothersome for males either. The guys being too close and the almost yaoi moments are not there, and the anime is pretty funny if you don't mind a little slap stick. The characters are good, the emotional pull is good since the focus is comedy, and the creativity is good as well, but the plot and episode quality while good is a bit lacking.
If you like the humor slap stick anime often does, this anime is up your ally. If you like romance anime like Ouran Host Club or Skip Beat this may be your thing as well. If you like silly but good characters, like to laugh, and love Japanese lore you may like this as well. The main issue is the price for 13 episodes. The anime isn't good enough to justify paying over 30 US dollars for by any means. I'd recommend renting this anime, as it is short and not for everyone though this anime is good for what it is trying to be.
