So the plot of Supernatural begins when a mother dies in a ball of flames. The father becomes a hunter of the supernatural and one of his two sons follow in his footsteps. The other one eventually ends up in law school with a girlfriend. Dean, the older brother finds his college bound younger brother Sam, and the two start up a small hunt in an effort to search for their dad. After the hunt, Sam goes back home and finds his girlfriend floating on the ceiling right before she bursts into flames and dies. Now Sam is thirsty for revenge much like his father, and Dean is probably the calmer of the bunch. Sam and Dean follow clues to find their dad and go on hunts for supernatural entities that threaten regular people. Eventually the overall plot thickens when the boys learn that the thing that killed their mother and Jessica, Sam’s girlfriend, is a powerful demon. After more hunting quests and a demon named Meg going after them, the boys and their dad reunite and find a powerful gun that can kill anything, including the demon. The season ends with a few twists and turns, showing the demon has yellow eyes however the plot isn’t completely resolved.
So the question is, is the plot any good? Well in a way yes. The main overall plot is pretty decent, even if it isn’t fully resolved by the end of the season. No the main villain isn’t dead or gone, but they accomplish a lot including sending a demon named Meg back to hell since she was clearly working with yellow eyes, and getting the gun even though it now only has one bullet. We went from knowing nothing to knowing it was the yellow eyed demon that killed certain people, and that it has something to do with Sam in general and his developing psychic powers. Yes this season is like a murder mystery with supernatural monsters, and yes it works like that.

Sam is a caring person but he is inquisitive as well. He is portrayed as a free thinker which gets him in trouble with his dad, but Sam is also the one who knows how to talk to people better then Dean. Sam however is also shown he isn’t as good at killing things as his older brother. Things really heat up for Sam when he shows that he had dreams about Jessica dying before she died, and that he is beginning to develop psychic powers which is probably part of the reason he was chosen by the yellow eyed demon.
Dean is shown to be the older brother, but he is also the one who enjoys having a beer and keeping company with the ladies. He is also the better killer, though he does care about people and is protective of both his father and his brother, possibly due to his past where his negligent attitude nearly got Sam killed. Dean may be able to talk his way out of issues but when it comes to talking to people about emotional things he isn’t really good at that and kind of has issues with it being a manly man of a character.
John, Dean and Sam’s father, is a bit of a hard ass. Obsessed with revenge, he does care about his children, but after losing their mother and turning their lives into a war based battle against creatures of the night. Diving into alcohol and secrets it is well known John broke ties with a lot of people due to the way he acted. While he does seem like he needs to be in charge and has a bit of an ego, John does care about his children.
Meg is basically a demon. She acts like a demon and pretty much you can almost tell she is off from the start. She is probably the weakest main character simply because she is there to be evil for evil’s sake. She gets her job done, being an underling to the yellow eyed demon and a powerful demon in her own right, but she is kind of bland especially after her involvement with demonic things is made known.
There are a ton of side characters and monsters in this show, some good and some bad, but even the bad side characters you don’t see enough to really care too long after it is all said and done. There are certainly more good characters, and Sam, Dean, and John feel like real people. There are multiple sides to their development and the way they act that make them feel more real then someone like Meg.

Very little to see here. When Sam is having a stressful moment, heck even when Dean is having a stressful moment, it is portrayed really well. The final two episodes of the season are great for this. Outside of those few moments and the action I have little pull for this show. I don’t see or know enough about the side characters to care about them or their issues, and at times it isn’t really believable when they deal with death. The two brothers deal with death in a more convincing manner that makes the audience care. The action and brother moments are good, and even better when the dad is there, but there isn’t much else here.

Each episode tries to get the horror movie vibe down, and it does a decent job, but since the show isn’t too scary, it is more of a murder mystery with urban legends and monsters. Not every episode accomplishes something to the main plot, but most of the episodes are incredibly interesting and fun none the less. Some of my personal favorites are “Scarecrow”, “Wendigo”, “Faith”, “Hook Man”, “Nightmare”, “Something Wicked”, and the two final episodes of the season, but there are plenty more. There are a few slower episodes but they aren’t bad just okay, but even with these episodes, the main plot ties into enough episodes to not really get too boring.

So there are two brothers hunting monsters and urban legends on a road trip across the United States. The new takes on vampires and certain monsters is pretty cool and the idea of murder mystery monster flicks but a TV show is impressive. They rewrote the book on vampires, but most of the monsters follow specific lore so this show is kind of a learning tool as well. Also the main plot is pretty creative as well, as it ties into demons and their plans for whatever. If you’ve seen future seasons you already know what happens, and watching this season with all the little details pointing to these details is interesting as this season really sets up what is to come later on.

If you like the idea of murder mystery with monsters then this is for you. It is a pretty good starting season to this show if you haven’t already been catching or watching it, and I highly recommend checking it out. It won’t be for everyone but the horror mystery genre fans will probably like this first season. I’ll try to review other seasons to the show later on down the year among other things, but this first season is worth a try if you like the genre even if you hate the later episodes try this show at the start for sure. This season is a little weak in the emotional pull but it does it okay enough, but the majority of characters, the overall plot, the episodes and even the creativity all have certain issues and weaknesses to them but they are mostly really good.
If you haven’t seen this show, I recommend trying at least the first season. If you’ve seen later episodes well try this season out. This show starts out differently then what it is now, and it was pretty great back in the day.
