The plot of Captain America is that there is a skinny kid named Steve Rodgers wants to join the military to fight Nazis in World War II. Yeah I know the last review also had em, but oh well. Steve, a small skinny kid with asthma tries to join several times under false names, however he is noticed at the Stark Expo Fair in New York by a scientist. The scientist, liking Rodgers’ personality enlists him for an experiment. Rodgers proves his worth with courage and the experiment is done with Rodgers turing from skinny to huge. After saving a child and fighting a Nazi spy, Rodgers is used as a publicity stunt being called Captain America to increase the sales of bonds. This works, but Steve wants to fight. After doing a show overseas at a military camp, Rodgers figures out his friend fought Hydra, the weapons development for the Nazis, and figures out there are a bunch of people captured. Leading a one man assault, Rodgers frees military men and frees his friend Bucky. Soon Captain America has a team of Howling Commandos with Bucky at his side. Bucky falls off a train during an assault and Cap deals with it. They then attack the main base against the Red Skull, the leader of Hydra who has taken Hydra beyond Hitler’s design and begins to try to take over the world. Captain America stops the Red Skull at the sacrifice of his own life, however in modern day he is found and revived, turns out he was only frozen in the ice.
So is this story good? Well actually yes. There are a few twists and turns to it making it a 3 dimensional plot with certain points. Despite the film not losing focus on the main goal of the plot, things happen for the main character to grow as a character and a hero. I feel it is a great plot which instead of being a super hero story is a historical science fiction war thriller which is rare as a big budget movie.

Steve Rodgers is probably the weakest character in the show. His reasons to stand against the bullies of the world. This is never explained and feels a little awkward at times. He does grow on you though and stays human unlike Red Skull. Steve shows exactly why he was a better man, he grieves over death, he is hurt by loss, but he also shows that risk and courage can mean the world, so he isn’t a bad character.
Carter has a ton of drive and determination. She is skilled as an agent and it shows. She likes Steve for his personality but his pecks don’t hurt. She is a strong character and intelligent but she isn’t shown very much sadly. A TV series or something with her in it I’d support.
Bucky is Steve’s best friend. While he is a stronger person physically then Steve they are still friends, and even when Steve replaces Bucky he still is loyal to his friend and doesn’t actually get jealous though he is shocked about it. He is a soldier and follows orders well up until his death…
Howling Commandos are once again side characters not seen enough to really stand out. They all have great personalities and such, but we only see them several times through the movie, though the times we do see them they have the brash sense of humor for soldiers to have so they don’t go insane, and each have their own skills.
The Red Skull… what can I say? He is a dark version of Captain America in the movie. If you know, this is the best version of a villain and Red Skull is no exception. He is the version of Cap which shows how Captain America’s new found power could corrupt him. It is up to Captain America to keep his humanity and not become the Red Skull. The Red Skull is what you’d call evil, he holds no value to life and will kill anyone without hesitation if he feels they have no worth to him, if they failed him, or if he is upset. They are all lower then him in his eyes, he is the Red Skull after all.
The characters are good in this movie, that is certain, the strongest being the villain. The issue with them is that you rarely see anyone but the villain and the hero. The hero is lacking a bit but not much, and the villain is great, but we need more characters to relate to but this movie doesn’t give us enough of these relatable good side characters.

The emotional pull was decent in the movie. You actually care that Bucky dies. You care that Cap sacrificed himself for the greater good. You find it funny when the word Fondue is mentioned because you know what it is while a kid from Brooklyn in this time era doesn't. You also laugh when Agent Carter shoots at Steve when he gets his new shield. You also feel how could the Red Skull is when he kills people so casually. You also feel excited about the action, and you probably feel the musical section was stupid just like Steve did.

This section is important guys. The costume designs are okay for sure, settings and what not are great but at times bland. What bothers me is the "Cap is awesome" montage with the Howling Commandos. The special effects aren't great during this section. Another issue I had was the musical scene, it was suppose to be annoying but it may have went on a little long and the Fremont Street light show near the end is a little unrealistic. Not only that but there are many times Captain America is slowed down to make the shot look all cool, and the explosion happening is moving at regular speed. Not bad, but the special effects aren't the greatest.

It is a lovely spin on the old World War II movie, using Hydra and Captain America instead of things like zombie Nazis. Honestly they take a bit of inspiration from Indiana Jones as well as the comics this movie is based on, but they do okay with it. There are a lot of interesting baddie designs as well as costume creativity. The overall creativity is pretty great even that dumb song is creative... annoying but creative.

Overall, if you like action, excitement, danger, a decent WWII fiction plot, great creativity and design, this movie is for you. There are some issues with characters not getting enough screen time, as well as some special effects that just don't work well on an HDMI set up. Still Captain America is a fun take on WWII and the Captain America comics in general, but has enough heart to show us that war isn't all that fun.
If I were to recommend this movie, I'd say that if you've been following along you will want to see this movie. If you like villains, plots with twists and turns, creative designs, good emotional pull, then this movie is up your alley. If you adore characters and special effects shy away. I'd say rent this movie before buying, as the musical alone is enough to turn around some people though it isn't incredibly long, but long enough to get on some nerves.
