This blog today is a random blog to talk about alternate timelines in gaming. This will talk about Mario, Assassin’s Creed, Soul Calibur, Sonic the Hedgehog, and of course Legend of Zelda. The point of this blog is to talk about timelines, as well as possible alternate timelines that occur in each universe. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room, er the hedgehog in the room. Sonic the Hedgehog is an interesting topic that I’ve actually already covered in a previous blog. The timeline is actually clearly set out in Sonic Generations by the Time Eater, so why go over it again? Well because this shows that in this universe time isn’t exactly a straight shot. While the game’s story wrote itself out of existence. If Sonic 06 no longer exists in the timeline, and in true paradox never happened at all, how is it that the Time Eater brought it back? Well simple, the story in which Sonic died exists in a perfectly real alternate timeline that while not existing in the current Sonic’s timeline, this Sonic did end up in that reality that he stopped. Imagine, there could be thousands of timelines that Sonic wrote out of history but are all real. That is the anti paradox right there. You can’t write an event out of history no matter what you do, somehow in some alternate world that even exists and will always exist.

And this is how we explain Blaze and Silver being in both the future and a separate world. Remember Blaze is from another world while Silver is from the future while Eggman Naga is from both. We also see Blaze befriending Silver in the future of Sonic 06. Simply put, Silver, Blaze, and Eggman Naga are from the future of a separate timeline. Also whoever Silver’s ancestors are, they do not die until they have a kid making it highly unlikely Silver is related to Sonic through blood. With his ability to use Chaos Controland telekinetic powers he is most likely a relative to Shadow the Hedgehog, someone we know doesn’t die but is sealed away in the future of 06 so he could be a relative of Silver though clearly Silver doesn’t know this if that is the case. Either way, this explains a lot from the Sonic alternate worlds, but we are missing one thing.

Metal Sonic’s original plot was that he came from the future to help Dr. Eggman defeat Sonic. Obviously Sonic has defeated Dr. Eggman for good in that alternate timeline, and as such Eggman in desperation sends a powerful and advanced mech to kill Sonic the Hedgehog. How is it Eggman lost so badly that he still had access to all of his equipment, but couldn’t test if Metal Sonic could defeat Sonic? What if Eggman couldn’t test Metal Sonic because Sonic was dead at that time? What if Metal Sonic was created in a time in which Sonic died? If Eggman manages to kill Sonic before he meets Elise then the Iblis disaster wouldn’t happen. Did Eggman live through that? Well he has lived through bigger explosions so it wouldn’t be unbelievable to think that Sonic and Elise died while he lived and created Metal Sonic to stop the Iblis Trigger from happening. After all I assume Sonic wouldn’t bury his arch nemesis alive in his lab, and there is no time that Eggman couldn’t escape such a confinement but still be able to create Metal Sonic. The only explanation is something related to Sonic that results in both Sonic’s death and Eggman being pushed to not be able to rule the world.

If this is the case, how is it the timeline has changed? Well simple. Sonic Heroes. Because of Metal Sonic’s actions Shadow was freed by Rouge so Metal Sonic could copy Shadow’s data and use Chaos Control. Without this, Shadow wouldn’t be a big part in Sonic 06 and Mephiles wouldn’t have been freed and may have been destroyed thus causing him to not cause Eggman’s ship to blow up. This is my timeline theory of Sonic the Hedgehog.

This discussion won’t be as long. As you can bet there is no way there are alternate timelines in Assassin’s Creed right? Well that may not be true. Obviously there has to be a reason Ezio shows up in Soul Calibur V am I right?

More to the point though, Assassin’s Creed is an interesting detail as you don’t alter time you only observe, however you do kind of alter time as you control Ezio. The main memories stay the same but perhaps you are changing all the small details of the world. Of course the timeline Desmond is in doesn’t change but perhaps all those details happened in an alternate timeline. According to the multiverse theory every action causes an endless amount of possibilities the action could go or what action you could choose. Desmond in turn could be creating alternate realities that he doesn’t have to live in. What is worse, Desmond could be creating an alternate reality by turning Ezio into a killer, the assassins kill him for killing other people, and Ezio doesn’t stop the pope’s son from taking over. Suddenly there is an alternate reality in which everyone is Catholic and the church is mostly corrupt while the assassins are dead all because of the Apple of Eden. Scary thought huh?
Since we talked about Ezio, let’s discuss Soul Calibur, and fighting games in general. Each main character you play as, you end up with a different ending for the game. Some of the characters come from different worlds, or possibly different timelines. Fighting games in general bring people from different worlds in the multiverse to fight and each character has a different ending in each fighting game even if it is Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and most other games. Each time you win Arcade Mode with a character, you create an alternate timeline in which that character won the fights and lived out his or her life in that fashion. Interesting huh? This goes far beyond Soul Calibur after all.
Alternate timelines in Mario games? What happens if Mario falls off a cliff and dies? Rosalina is born. Yes, this harkens back to a Game Theory video, but hear me out. Most of this was talked about in the video, but I’m kind of curious. If Rosalina is created from an alternate timeline then what happens if both Mario and Luigi get game over? What happens to Daisy if Luigi hooks up with Peach? I’m not entirely sure. Honestly perhaps Rosalina was created before the N64 era? After all up to Super Mario World Luigi was always player 2 trying to save Peach just as much as Mario was. This would make sense that Rosalina was created in a timeline that Mario died on his first adventure or close to that, though one could argue it was through the New Super Mario Bros, but I’m not exactly sure since Luigi has Daisy at that point in time. Maybe the New Super Luigi Bros DLC is an alternate timeline?

Also what about Smash Bros. Melee? There in Adventure Mode in Melee in which Bowser is the main bad guy trying to rule over the multiverse of Smash Bros. Is this Bowser from an alternate world? That would explain Giga Bowser a form Bowser takes that never appears in a Mario game to date. Is this Bowser from an alternate reality in which his Mario and Luigi are dead? Perhaps the Mario in Smash Bros is the one we all know and love, but maybe Bowser from Smash Bros. isn't?

So what can be said about the timeline of the Legend of Zelda? Does Hyrule Warriors fit into the timeline? Well it can. If you think about it, the game never says that the split in the timeline shows that the splits are from the past or the future. If Hyrule Warriors is on the timeline (it supposedly isn’t but let’s play along) the game splits into three different time periods. They never say when the time periods are from but I’m assuming all of them are the past. Why? Because of the way they describe Midna. They say she is in imp form “again” which suggests Twilight Princess already happened. What if Hyrule Warriors takes place after Twilight Princess but before Four Swords Adventures? Just an interesting thing to think about.
