Hello and welcome to my look into the new DLC of Smash Bros. As some of you may know, I reviewed both the 3DS as well as the Wii U games separately, as well as looked into the DLC for Mewtwo and the costume packs. Well of course I'm back to talk about three new characters, a few new stages, and more costumes. Let's begin.
Dang Wii Fit Trainer looks horrifying in this picture... so lets start with the elephant in the room. Ryu the second Capcom representative in Smash Bros. is now here. Does he make a lick of sense? Yes. He does have a friendly history with Nintendo, and if Capcom was to get a second character in the game, Ryu isn't a bad choice. Not my first choice for another Capcom character, but not my last either. Does he play well? In a way yes. He is an interesting character as he controls FAR differently then all the other Smash fighters. He actually has a combo system! That being said he is a brute as well. He isn't a bad character by any means, and if you can control him he fights well. He comes with his own stage which isn't bad, not great, but makes sense. It is a cool stage but not the best stage. If you love Street Fighter, fear not, Ryu plays more like Street Fighter then Smash Bros. anyway. If you are not a fan, he will be difficult to get use to and control but he still isn't bad. Very original.
I like Roy. He was the better version of Marth in Melee, and it is nice to see him again. Is he as good as he was? Well actually no, he is a bit better. See, Roy isn't an outright clone of Marth anymore, Lucina fills that well. Roy is more like Ganondorf, not a complete clone of Marth, but familiar enough to recognize. He fights slightly differently giving him his own identity. If you've played Melee, or just like Marth's play style, I recommend checking out Roy.
I don't remember Lucas being the damage sponge he is in this game. He has an absurdly powerful up smash, and he stays in battle a lot. Some of his attacks aren't as strong as Ness' attacks, but Lucas easily holds his own with his better special attacks as well as his longer grapple and his up smash. His down smash is pretty good too. I never cared for Lucas play wise, I thought Ness was better in Brawl. Now I'm a Lucas fan and I haven't even made a custom one yet. Lucas is highly recommended to get, just because he plays awesomely.
The Inkling and Megaman costumes are cool, I enjoy the Virtua Fighter costumes, and heck, even the costume from Tekken is cool. I personally prefer the Zero costume and maybe the Squid Hat or Male Inkling's hair. The Isabella costume... I could leave that in the dust, it looks weird honestly. They only add to the looks of the characters.
I'd get them. All of them. For slightly less then 30 bucks, you can get all the costumes, music, stages, and characters. Is it worth it? Sure if you are a Smash Bros. fan. It certainly makes me happier to play and work with the new content for sure. The stages are rather simple but one of them is free and the other is an N64 stage so yeah. The other stage is Ryu's stage and is so far the better of the DLC stages. Roy and Lucas have been improved, and Ryu is a unique fighter, while maybe not the best, is still worth a look into and for 8 bucks it isn't that bad a deal (less if you bundle).
After talking with my friend about it, and since Capcom now has two reps, I'm almost certain Sega and Namco will also end up with two reps. After thinking long and hard, I had more ideas for Sega then Namco. Could Monkey D. Luffy or Nightmare actually show up in Smash? Well eventually we both remembered the Tales series. While most of them are on other systems, Nintendo did have this guy, Lloyd Irving, in one of the Tales games. Lloyd also appeared in the Nintendo only Soul Caliber Legends game as a secret character. Using duel swords, and him being rather popular, I'd almost hazard a guess that if Namco had another character up in Smash Bros, who wasn't from Tekken, it would be Lloyd. This is my prediction.
As for Sega, I was thinking the most logical choice would be from Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher, or Space Channel 5 much to my annoyance. My friend, Lone Wolf, is hoping for Joe Musashi, from the Shinobi series, so Smash can have more then two ninjas. After thinking about it and looking up Sega franchises, I'm almost certain the top pick is actually Nights. This makes the most logical choice, he fits with the Smash Bros. feel, he has a Wii exclusive game, and lets face facts, despite how many games he doesn't have, he is still rather popular. While he doesn't really have much of a fighting style, Duck Hunt just defends almost every possible choice anyway. Nights is my prediction if Sega also gets another rep.
